She saw something disturbing from the record shop
A man got pulled out of his car by the cops
They thought it was stolen because he was black
This future black panther was not having that
She broke through the crowd
Of pale blank faces
Put her body on the line,
And was beaten then fined.
Her brother could hardly tell it was her face
A violence much deeper than bruises
She remembered that day for the rest of her life
And thought of all the guilty bystanders
At the station they taunted “she can’t be a girl”
Humiliated by threats that were sexual
The one female officer thought it was wrong
But wouldn’t stand up to the misogyny
She stood out from the crowd
Of pale blank faces
Put her body on the line,
This beating defined her
Her brother could hardly tell it was her face
A violence much deeper than bruises
She remembered that day for the rest of her life
And thought of all the guilty bystanders
We need to be more like Olive Morris
When they’re trampling on our rights.

The Missed Trees Birmingham, UK
The Missed Trees are an alt-folk duo from Birmingham consisting of singer-
songwriter/guitarist Joe Peacock and
singer/fiddle player Louisa Davies-Foley.
Joe has released three albums as a genre-hopping solo artist, but now teams up with Louisa who has a background in traditional music and has played in a number of local folk bands including Elfynn, The Dirty Old Folkers and Amaranth.
