Dian
Dian
So captivated by the shy inhabitants
Of the misty mountainsides
She took a hunter as her guide
A life with great apes was her only destiny
Dian
Could imitate their every move
She knew that she was on their land
Their acceptance was its own reward
The thrill she felt never diminished with time.
Dian
Lies beside Digit in Karisoke
Found in her cabin on Boxing Day
Fighting with poachers she made enemies
But through her life’s work the gorillas still survive

Sacrificial Bees

Sacrificial bees
In the heart of a tropical forest
Impatient hands were painting gold over the fire-damaged altar
Inside, the rainbow faces
Must have looked at each other with a sense of fear for the future
Religion got them
Their colony was sacrificed for that facade
Inside the altar
They were painted gold as sacrificial bees
Relics of an ecosystem
Still carrying the traces of the plants that no longer grow there
Over a century passed
Before the shy bees were discovered to reveal all their secrets
Religion got them
Their colony was sacrificed for that facade
Inside the altar
They were painted gold as sacrificial bees

Big Mary

Big Mary
Mary wasn’t a murderous beast
Her trainer drove her to breaking point
He was riding her down the street
And she just acted on instinct
Threw him off, crushed him under her feet
The crowd were baying for blood
Firing bullets into her thick hide
They called for an execution
Swinging there from a railcar crane
Big Mary was not to blame
The crowds ran from the crack of the chains
Until they strung her up again
She was damned by a kangaroo court
A small town’s bloodlust satisfied
To quell their boredom, an animal slaughtered
Not the circus, but entertainment
Erwin soon became notorious
And in the town who hanged an elephant
Her grave is unmarked still
Selling fibreglass to salve their conscience
Swinging there from a railcar crane
Big Mary was not to blame
The crowds ran from the crack of the chains
Until they strung her up again
Oh Mary, what did they do to you?
So far from the jungles that you loved
What a way to end your days
In a railway yard in Tennessee
